SUMMARY: We intend to develop and implement a three-year graduate/advanced certificate program in education with specialization in elementary school science education. The primary objective is to fill a statewide niche in leadership for K-6 science education, similar to the goals established for mathematics by the Vermont Mathematics Professional Development Initiative. Through this initiative, teachers will increase their knowledge of content in science, expand their critical thinking/problem solving skills, develop a comprehensive understanding of standards-based science and its assessment, and develop leadership skills so they can serve as a resource and deliver professional development to their colleagues. The design also incorporates a novel initiative that will link sustainability of the program to the school principal/administrator. The objectives are to provide the administrators with a better understanding of what standards-based science curriculum looks like and valid ways of assessing it. The administrator's role in support of "master teacher of science" in his/her school will also be addressed.
